1993. MONICA (16) is a fearless aspiring Olympic gymnast with the talent and drive to win gold. With unwavering support from her single father, RICH (35), an unlikely "gym dad" covered in menacing tattoos, it seems like nothing can stop her quest for Olympic glory. But then five weeks before the most important meet of her life, Monica tears a ligament in her knee and the future she and Rich imagined is now thrown into question. Monica’s injury reveals the fragility in the life they’ve created. Without gymnastics, Monica becomes isolated and bored, desperately needing guidance and support from her father. But Rich, shaken by her injury, is unaware of Monica’s emotional needs. Stuck in a dead-end job, in an economically devastated town, Monica’s Olympic aspirations are all he’s had to keep going. Missing the thrill of competition, Monica struggles to stay focused on recovery and welcomes the distraction provided by MIKE, a sweet but messed up kid from her school. Soon Monica gets swept up in "teenage life" with Mike, throwing her career as a gymnast into jeopardy. Will Rich be able to mature as a man and father and see that Monica needs her dad more than ever before? Will Monica be able to return to gymnastics and be the star she once was?
